Saint Emilion underground : The most unusual monument in the lower part of the town is undoubtedly the monolithic church, entirely carved out of solid limestone. Its volume makes it the largest of Europe. The catacombs shelter a mass grave and tombs, with a part of Emilian’s life: the monk Emilion lived in a small hermitage carved out of a natural grotto, located nearby. The “chapelle de la trinité” (trinity chapel), built in honour of Emilian, is an excellent example of thirteenth Century architecture. Inside, the recently cleaned frescoes are remarkable. Visits occur every hour depending on language. After the visit, browse into the streets of Saint Emilion, beautiful and charming.
